Lifelong Learning

Who knew? Retirement is providing more and more learning opportunities. Recently, my granddaughter taught me how to play chess. Kind of. I'm still not very good, but I'm learning! She beats me every time. This includes the five-year-old who said, "Don't worry, Grandma, I'll be easy on you!". The main thing is that I am keeping my old brain learning new things.
Chess isn't the only thing. I am trying my hand at quilting. I'm starting by watching YouTube videos and creating small samples. I think I am going to get a kit to do a small project soon. I'm currently taking requests for quilts from my granddaughters, including their preferred colors, designs, and other preferences. I'm not sure how quickly I'll complete these, but I hope to work on the older two granddaughters first. Time is flying. They are 14 and 13. Wow. It seems like they were just infants in my arms!!
Why is it so important that I keep learning? I feel the drive to keep my mind busy is due to a strong link to Alzheimer's/dementia on my mother's side of the family. I think that keeping your mind busy may be the best defense against the dreaded disease. It may come eventually, but I'm not going to bow down and just let it happen.
I wonder what new ventures I will endeavor in next? Only time will tell!
Later...
